Red Orchestra is a game designed for gamers, by gamers. Winner of the Unreal Tournament 2004 mod competition, the mod team won the rights to turn their mod into a commercial game. Red Orchestra: Ostfront, is a shooter touted for its uncompromising realism. Weapons use iron sights, no ammo counters, telescopic sights with peripheral vision, no crosshairs when the weapon is not in a firing position, manual bolting of weapons, correct ballistic characteristics, etc. As an infantryman you can sprint, walk, crouch and crawl, although you'll have to pay attention to your stamina. If you run to the point of exhaustion, you'll find your aim noticeably less steady. There's also a wide choice if you want to crew an AFV. The Germans have the SdKfz 251 half-track, Pz IV F2, Tiger, StuG III and Panther to choose from, while the Russians have a similar array of T-34's, IS-2's, BA-64's and others.
There are 13 maps in Red Orchestra, ranging from small farm towns and the plains surrounding them, to a bombed out rail yard and a monastery set atop a hill. These maps are generally quite large and well designed.
Red Orchestra is an online-only game, although the developers have included a single-player practice mode, where you can populate a map with bots and learn the many nuances of the game without getting berated by human players. For online gameplay, the game also has built-in voice chat and uses its own server browser. Since the game rewards teamwork and not individual action, there's rarely any acrimony or adversarial frustration. The modding community has already created several new mods and custom maps, which can be accessed via the Steam website www.redorchestragame.com
